In November 2017, Down East Community Hospital and Calais Regional Hospital partnered to bring an OB clinic to Calais after CRH had to make the tough decision to close its OB unit. That clinic is now scheduled to close on Friday, December 28, 2018.

Down East Community Hospital is among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for promoting enrollment in state organ donor registries in a national campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The campaign has added more than 443,000 donor enrollments to state registries nationwide.

Wayne Peters becomes the new Board Chair of Down East Community Hospital as former Chair, David Whitney, terms off the Board. Mr. Whitney was on the Board for 9 years and served as Chair since 2014. “David dedicated many hours of service to the hospital over the past 9 years and we can’t say enough about how much we appreciated his work on the capital campaign to raise the needed funds for the Emergency Department expansion.” Dennis Welsh, DECH President & CEO.
DEC Rehabilitation Receives $7,500 Grant for Balance Program
Rehabilitation Manager, Heather Dodsworth, applied for and was awarded a grant in the amount of $7,500 from the Maine Community Foundation! The funds are to help in the purchase of a Balance Assessment and Conditioning system to assist in the development and implementation a comprehensive balance program for the citizens of Washington County including identifying persons at risk for falls and improving agility, muscle tone and strength, range of motion, and safe mobility.
Colon Cancer: Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention – A Surgeons’ Perspective
Machias – Incidence of colorectal Cancer in Washington County is one of the highest in the nation. Dr. Aziz Massaad will give an educational seminar on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the disease on May 5 at UMM Science Building 102 from 1pm to 3pm. Dr. Massaad is a surgeon who has worked in Machias for more than 20 years, performing colonoscopies and surgeries at Down East Community Hospital. His work has significantly contributed to the decrease in the death rate from this cancer in Washington County.
