Down East Community’s Nutrition Services Department

    The Nutrition Services Department of Down East Community Hospital provides food and nutrition needs for inpatients, outpatients, visitors and employees. Inpatient Food Services are provided through a contract with Maine Veterans’ Home of Machias. A restaurant style menu and daily special is used in order to provide a wide variety of Down East comfort foods during your stay with us.

    Outpatient Nutrition Education is provided by Consulting Dietitian Denise Harris each Monday. Denise has her Masters in Nutrition and accepts referrals from your Health Care Provider via the outpatient scheduling office (255-0474).  In addition to these services Down East Community Hospital is home to The Skylight Café!

    For your convenience we accept cash, personal check or credit/debit card payments.

    Breakfast  

    8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.


    The Skylight café is open Monday through Friday. We open at 8:00 a.m. with self-service continental breakfast items available until 11:00 a.m.  Although assistance may not always be available during this time we are pleased to operate on the honor system.  This allows you to make your own breakfast and your own change.  For your convenience, price lists are posted and a change bowl is present.  A toaster and microwave is available in the seating area.

    A Keurig Brewing system is available 24/7 for fresh coffee service.  During open hours an assortment of Green Mountain products may be purchased from the counter.  Once the café is closed the Green Mountain k-cups may be purchased from the snack vending machine.

    Lunch

    11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.

    The Skylight Café boasts the largest salad/sandwich bar in town with over 30 fresh items on it daily for only $0.40 per ounce!  In addition to the fresh salad/sandwich bar we offer a hot soup daily and an Entrée special three days a week; usually Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Check the menu board for the Special or Soup of the day.  A tasty treat will be available to satisfy your after dinner sweet tooth as well.


    Anytime

    For your convenience snack and cold beverage machines are available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.  You are welcome to sit in the café anytime you’d like, day or night. 

    Feel free to take your meal back to a patient room in order to dine with your loved one.

    Have a toddler with you?  You will find a high chair in the seating area for your convenience.
