Machias - Incidence of colorectal Cancer in Washington County is one of the highest in the nation.  Dr. Aziz Massaad will give an educational seminar on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the disease on May 5 at UMM Science Building 102 from 1pm to 3pm. Dr. Massaad is a surgeon who has worked in Machias for more than 20 years, performing colonoscopies and surgeries at Down East Community Hospital. His work has significantly contributed to the decrease in the death rate from this cancer in Washington County.

Machias - Dr. Dwight. Dr. Inegbenijie and the whole OB/GYN team would like you to join them in welcoming Bjarni Thomas, CNM.  Bjarni is a certified nurse mid-wife who will see patients at the private practice in Calais and at the Women’s Center on the DECH campus in Machias.  Bjarni has already begun to see patients at the Women’s Center and she will start seeing patients in Calais, at 43 Palmer Street, later this month. 
Bjarni received her RN from Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston in 1997 and her BSN from the University of Phoenix in 2005.  She went on to earn her Certificate in Midwifery in 2007 from Philadelphia University.

On January 2 at 10:04 pm Donald Therrien IV, weighing in at 6 lbs., 11 oz., became the first baby born at Down East Community Hospital for the year 2016.  Donald is the handsome son of Alicia Batson and Donald Therrien III of Addison.  Donald Therrien IV, not scheduled to be born until January 9, decided he would like to arrive a little sooner.

Down East Community Hospital participated in green and blue day, one of several things done this month to bring awareness to the importance of organ and tissue donation.  April is Donate Life month, a celebration commemorating those who have given the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.

The Muskie School of Public Service Patient Safety Academy will award Down East Community Hospital’s Quality Improvement Nurse, Erin Ingalls, RN, BSN, CNOR, CPPS, with their Rising Tide Award. 

Last fall, members of the Machias Rotary donated their time and hard work to reclaim the beauty that once was the Hospital courtyard.  They weeded and cut back old growth and then planted hundreds of tulip bulbs. 

Sue Dorr, a licensed social worker who started work at Down East Community Hospital in 1979 decided to retire after 36 years of service. 

The employees of A.C. Inc. on Beals Island proudly presented DECH Board Chair, David Whitney, with the $15,000 donation that put the Emergency Department Capital Campaign over the $1,000,000 mark.

The American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA) is proud to honor Geri Bryant, Administrator of Sunrise Care Facility in Jonesport, Maine, as a 2016 recipient of the ACHCA Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award

Down East Community Hospital, BlueWater Emergency Partners, and Sunrise Opportunities come together to support the efforts of ARISE Addiction Recovery Inc. in improving access to addiction recovery services and recently presented ARISE founder, Paul Trovarello, with a donation in the amount of $7,500.
