Rehabilitation Department

dech_REhab-90828.jpgThe rehabilitation department at Down East Community Hospital provides physical, occupational and speech therapy services to the community members of Washington County.  Initial evaluations and follow-up treatments are scheduled in 45 minute increments.  Treatments are provided on a one-on-one basis with excellent continuum of care by one therapist completing your entire course of treatment.  We use a team approach to your treatment and have a steady base of communication of your plan of care with your physician.

Services are also available during an inpatient stay at Down East Community Hospital.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists have earned multiple undergraduate and graduate level degrees.  They are board certified through the Federation and State Board of Physical Therapy and licensed in the State of Maine.

decrease pain through a variety of different treatment techniques that may include:
  • Manual therapy in a hands-on approach
  • Exercises and a comprehensive home program to enable you to help yourself
  • Modalities

Physical Therapists treat a wide variety of diagnoses.  These may include:

  • Post-operative care for orthopedic or neurologic disorders
  • Pain management
  • Headaches, temperomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
  • Sports injuries

Other treatment services available at Down East Community Hospital: 

  • Lymphedema Treatment Program:  A certified Lymphedema therapist provides Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques for the treatment of swollen extremities that interfere with activities of daily living frequently present after cancer surgeries or patients with vascular problems.  Therapists can also measure and fit custom supports.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation:  Patients with dizziness and unsteady movement caused by inner ear problems are evaluated and treated.

Speech Therapy 
Speech Language Pathologists evaluate and treat all aspects of communication and swallowing ability.

  • Communication and swallowing difficulties may involve development of speech and language in young children or a disruption of skills in adults due to injury or disease.
  • The Speech Language Pathologist evaluates the level of communication or swallowing ability and develops a treatment plan to restore or improve function.
  • Our Speech Language Pathologist has earned an undergraduate and graduate degree.  She is certified by the American Speech Language Hearing Association and the Speech Audiology of Canada. In addition she has earned a Certificate of Clinical Competency and has over 20 years of experience.

Other treatment services available at Down East Community Hospital:

  • Swallowing Evaluations: Our Speech Therapist, along with the DECH Imaging Department, is able to evaluate and develop treatment strategies for patients with swallowing problems with video fluoroscopic imaging. 
  • Videostroboscopy:  Our Speech therapist, in conjunction with our Otolaryngologist (ENT), are able to perform videostroboscopic evaluations of the vocal cords for voice therapy issues.

Occupational Therapy: 
Our occupational therapist has earned an undergraduate and graduate level degree.  She is board certified through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.

Occupational therapists promote independence and engagement in every aspect of life.  They work to improve day-to-day tasks like bathing and eating to more complex and demanding activities such as driving and community mobility.

Clinic Hours and Service Locations
Inpatient services are available five days per week for all services, with weekend inpatient physical therapy coverage as needed.
 
Outpatient services are available 7:15 to 5:00 Monday through Friday. Please call for more information

All services are provided with a physician’s referral. All major insurances are accepted with authorized approval from the carrier.
